Coach Cal Not In Favor Of The G League? Color Me Shocked

University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach John Calipari is not a big proponent of the NBA’s G league path; in other news, the Twilight Saga sucked. See what I did there? OF COURSE Coach Cal is against the G league route that’s opened up, it’s going to suck his talent up better than Duke ever could. Cal has made a career out of the one-and-doner, and now that the G League will pay players just as much as UK to not go to class, he has a reason to be worried.

"My issue with the G League trying to entice players by giving them more money is not the kids that you're getting," Calipari said Monday on his Coffee with Cal web show (h/t Jon Hale of the Louisville Courier Journal). "It's the thousands of ninth and 10th graders that think that's how they're going to make it when you and I know it's going to be 2 percent. We're not talking 50. It will be thousands and thousands and thousands."

This is the thing I’ve never understood about the education argument. Schools aren’t going anywhere, the option to return will always be there. A player should cash in when they have the opportunity. Anybody in athletics has a finite shelf life. They only get so many cracks at the apple. Go get yours’ youngin. Athletes would be doing themselves, and their family a disservice if they didn't take advantage of the opportunity that's given.

In the college basketball landscape, it’s somewhat unclear who the good guys really are and I do think Cal is a good guy but to not question who the source is on this would be irresponsible. He's arguing against a concept and thought process that directly effects his highly successful business model just like anybody with common sense else would - I'd just consider where the opinion is coming from before accepting it as fact.
