Bone to Pick: What the Hell Were AP Voters Thinking?
Updated: Apr 10, 2020
Once the All-American teams were announced on March 20 th , I had one initial thought: what in the **** were the AP voters thinking. I mean seriously. How in the world was Udoka Azubuike not a 1 st team All- American? Arguably the most pivotal piece on a Jayhawks team that went 28-3 and the prohibitive favorite to win it all. This omission is absolute bonkers. Perhaps the greatest American tragedy since Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi. What a piece of garbage that movie was. Yuck.
Anyways. Azubuike led the nation in field goal percentage at 74.8%, while also finishing top 20 in both blocks and rebounds. Kansas as a team finished 2 nd in adjusted defense according to kenpom and top 10 in scoring defense. How? Because of the most intimidating low post shot blocker since Hasheem Thabeet in 2008/2009. Sure, stylistically his game isn’t as aesthetic pleasing as Obi Toppin, Myles Powell or even Luka Garza but what he does do is impact the game in un-quantifiable ways.
Come on. As a basketball community, do better. While I let the voters sit and ponder about what they’ve done like punishing an adolescent pre-teen, enjoy this video montage of Azubuike dunking his defenders into an alternate universe.
