Word To The Wise: Don't Sleep On WVU
Every single year there’s a team in each conference that sneaks up on everybody, everyone but me. I’m going to scour through each conference and pick a team that is going to surprise their respective leagues with the possibility of winning the regular season conference titles. We haven’t talked in depth about the Big12 so far this offseason other than Kansas’ formal response to their notice of allegations and incoming freshman Cade Cunningham.
I took a deep dive into the conference and each teams’ respective rosters and one thing stood out to me: we are all sleeping on Bobby Huggins and West Virginia. They finished the season at 21-10, finished tied for 3rd in the conference and were primed to make the NCAA tournament. The staff was holding their breaths this offseason in the hope that the Big O (Oscar Tshiebwe) would return for his Sophomore season. Not only is Oscar coming back, but so is fellow frontcourt-mate Derek Culver who averaged close to a double-double as well as guards Miles McBride and Jordan McCabe. They finished the season 14-2 at home, it’s undoubtably a tough place to play, just ask Bill Self. Huggins has a career.700 winning percentage and has taken WVU to 8 NCAA tournaments (should’ve been 9 if not for COVID-19). If there were a team that can shock the rest of the league, it’s the Neers’.
